At age four, many children are talking in full sentences, playing pretend, and interacting more with peers. If you’re wondering about autism, there are certain signs to look for.
Common signs of autism in a 4-year-old may include limited eye contact, difficulty with back-and-forth conversation, or delayed speech. Some children may repeat phrases (echolalia) instead of answering questions. Others may prefer playing alone, struggle to share interests, or have trouble understanding emotions.
You might also notice repetitive behaviors like lining up toys, hand flapping, or intense focus on specific topics. Sensory sensitivities are common too, your child may react strongly to loud noises, certain textures, or bright lights.
Every child develops at their own pace, and having one or two of these signs doesn’t automatically mean autism. What matters most is patterns over time and how your child communicates, plays, and connects with others.
