Can ABA Therapy Replace School?

ABA therapy and school serve different purposes, and in most cases, ABA does not replace school.

School focuses on academics: reading, math, writing, and classroom learning. Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) focuses on communication, social skills, behavior regulation, and daily living skills. According to the CDC, ABA is an evidence-based approach that helps children build skills needed for learning and independence.

In our work, we often collaborate with schools rather than replace them. ABA can help children:

  • Follow classroom routines
  • Improve peer interactions
  • Reduce disruptive behaviors
  • Increase independence

For some young children in early intervention, ABA may temporarily serve as a primary setting before transitioning into school. However, long-term academic instruction typically happens within the school system under special education laws.

The goal of ABA is to prepare children to succeed, not to remove educational opportunities.
