Autism levels (Level 1, 2, and 3) describe how much support a person needs at a given time, not their intelligence or long-term potential. So, can someone go from Level 3 to Level 1? In some cases, yes, their support needs can significantly decrease with effective intervention and skill development.
Level 3 autism indicates a need for very substantial support, often involving limited communication and higher behavioral challenges. Level 1 indicates milder support needs, typically with greater independence. With early, consistent, and individualized therapy, such as Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), children can build communication, social, and daily living skills that reduce the level of support they require.
In our work at Wonder Star ABA across Maryland and Ohio, we’ve seen children who initially needed intensive support later gain functional language, improved emotional regulation, and increased independence. While autism itself is lifelong, growth and progress are absolutely possible.
The goal isn’t changing a label, it’s helping your child thrive.
Wonder Star ABA is here to provide compassionate, individualized support ABA therapy in Maryland, and Ohio.
